The Bulls suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar in the opening round of the Isuzu UTE A-League.
Round One saw the Bulls employ their familiar strategy: sitting back, absorbing pressure, and waiting to counter. Their defensive resilience was on display early, with new signing Damien Da Silva making a crucial block to deny Brisbane a clear chance.
At the other end, Luke Brattan delivered a pinpoint corner to Harry Sawyer, who rose above the defence but was unable to direct his header on target, sending it just wide.
Brisbane broke the deadlock in the 38th minute after being awarded a penalty, which Jay O’Shea confidently converted. Despite pushing for an equaliser before the break, the Bulls went into halftime trailing 1-0.
The second half began with renewed energy from the Bulls, creating several promising chances. However, they couldn’t find the finishing touch. A-League debutants Sime Grzan, Rafael Duran, and Ji Dong-won were introduced to add fresh legs and spark in the attack.
Brisbane were reduced to ten men in the 58th minute when Dimitrios Valkanis received a second yellow card. With the numerical advantage, the Bulls increased the pressure. Chris Ikonomidis and Anthony Caceres both came close, but their efforts narrowly missed the mark.
Despite a determined push in the final moments, the Bulls couldn’t find the equaliser. The match ended in a hard-fought 1-0 loss.
