Popovic: “The Main Focus Should be on Us”

It’s a busy Christmas period for the Bulls, with three consecutive away fixtures on the schedule.

Ahead of the Boxing Day clash against the Newcastle Jets, Kristian Popovic spoke to the media about his return to the pitch and the team’s mindset.

A tight turnaround is something the Bulls have become accustomed to this season, balancing commitments across the A-Leagues and the Asian Champions League Two. With only a short break between the Melbourne City and Newcastle Jets matches, Popovic says the squad is well prepared for the challenge ahead.

“It’s quite normal now. Every three or four days we are playing games and the team is really fit and really strong so we are ready for this game on Friday.”

“The main focus should be on us and how we can get the three points on Friday. So I’m sure it will be a really great game.”

Popovic recently made his return to the pitch following a lengthy injury and recovery period and is delighted to be back representing the Bulls.

“Really excited to be back. It’s been a long 12 months and I thank god that I’ve been able to come through my injury stronger.”

“I’m just really enjoying my football now and really happy to be back playing. So really looking forward to getting more minutes and enjoying the rest of the season.”

Marking his return, Popovic made his first appearance in the Asian Champions League Two and celebrated in style, scoring his first goal for the Bulls — a moment that had been a long time coming.

“It was a long time coming. Just really happy to have played the 90 minutes and to have scored a goal as well.”

“Hopefully I can keep building on that, keep seeing good performances and yeah, just keep enjoying my football.”

Looking ahead, a blockbuster home clash against Sydney FC looms on January 10 at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. While the fixture is still around the corner, Popovic says the Bulls are eager to return in front of a home crowd.

“I think every game we play at home is so important and the fans really push us and help us get over the line.”

“So playing at Campbelltown, we’re trying to make it a fortress this year. It will be really exciting and I hope to see everyone at the game.”
