Bulls advance to AFC Cup knockout stages

A late-night clash in Manila sees the Bulls advance to the knockout stages of the AFC Cup, after defeating Dynamic Herb Cebu FC at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

It was a late-night win that saw the Bulls extend their impressive AFC Cup run by securing three vital points at Rizal Memorial Stadium, defeating Filipino team Dynamic Herb Cebu FC. The Bulls opened the scoring just three minutes into the match after Kearyn Baccus and Matthew Millar teamed up during a corner set piece, which was taken short by Daniel De Silva. Baccus’ expertly delivered cross into the box found Millar’s head, and the subsequent header landed the ball securely into the back of the net. The Bulls continued to fiercely guard their lead throughout the first half, with Kurto comfortably saving all of Cebu FC’s attempts at goal.

The second half started at a slower pace compared to the first, with the Bulls focusing on their defensive efforts to keep Cebu FC at bay. A pivotal moment unfolded with substitute Jed Drew, who made an immediate impact off the bench, controlled the clearance from the Cebu FC defender, and slotted the ball into the net just one minute after entering the field. Noteworthy appearances off the bench were also made by Ali Auglah, Charles M’Mombwa, Jerry Skotadis, and Jesper Webber.

The Bulls sustained their lead and had several promising chances from Valere Germain, Daniel De Silva, and Ali Auglah, whose opportunities narrowly missed the target. Matthew Jurman’s impressive volley from outside the box, unfortunately, landed in the hands of the Cebu FC goalkeeper. The Bulls continued to fight throughout the remaining minutes of the second half but it was Ali Auglah broke the deadlock and sealed the win for the Bulls in injury time. Auglah made a beautiful run into the box, drawing out a one-on-one encounter with Cebu FC’s keeper. Auglah’s initial shot was blocked, but Auglah skillfully controlled the rebound, chipping the ball over the keeper and defenders and calmly burying it into the back of the net.

The match concluded with a 0-3 victory for the Bulls, solidifying their position at the summit of Group F and securing their spot in the AFC Cup knockout stages, which have been scheduled for February 2024.
