A night celebrating grassroots football ended in heartbreak for the Bulls, who fell 1-3 to the Central Coast Mariners on Wednesday evening.
The clash marked the sixth annual Bulls Grassroots Round, a celebration of the heart of the South West Sydney football community. Twenty-six teams from five associations took part in a special half-time march around Campbelltown Sports Stadium, highlighting the strength and spirit of the region’s grassroots clubs.
The Bulls started brightly, creating a string of early chances through Mitchell Duke, Luke Vickery and Dean Bosnjak. Despite their attacking intent, they were unable to find the breakthrough. The Mariners opened the scoring in the 37th minute from the penalty spot following a contentious decision.
The Bulls continued to press for an equaliser, with Rafael Duran coming agonisingly close, but they went into the break trailing 1-0.
The second half began at a slower tempo, with the Bulls absorbing sustained pressure from the visitors. The Mariners doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, but the response was immediate. Anthony Caceres produced a moment of quality, unleashing a powerful strike that rocketed into the back of the net to bring the Bulls back within one.
Momentum soon shifted again, however. Tomislav Uskok was shown a straight red card in the 70th minute following a heavy challenge, reducing the Bulls to 10 men. Just 10 minutes later, Alexander Robinson was also sent off, leaving the hosts with nine players for the closing stages.
The Mariners capitalised on the numerical advantage, adding a third in the 85th minute to seal the result.
The 1-3 defeat sees the Mariners leapfrog the Bulls on the ladder, pushing the Bulls down to seventh and out of the top six.
