A Hot Day, a Tough Game, and an Unforgettable Night as Junior Reporter

Article by Macarthur Bulls Junior Reporter, Alise VALENCIA

Campbelltown Sports Stadium was buzzing on Saturday night as excited fans streamed through the gates ahead of Macarthur Bulls’ clash with Sydney FC. Before kick-off, I spoke to several supporters about their score predictions, with most tipping close results such as 3–2, 2–1, or 1–0, largely in favour of the Bulls.

Earlier in the day, temperatures had reached close to 43°C, and although conditions had cooled by kick-off, the effects of the heat were still evident as the match progressed. This was particularly noticeable in the second half, with players from both sides visibly tiring and having to dig deep for energy. Despite the challenging conditions, the intensity and effort remained high throughout the full 90 minutes.

Sydney FC struck early and maintained strong attacking pressure, eventually securing a 3–0 victory. Goals from Piero Quispe, Victor Campuzano, and Pat Wood highlighted Sydney’s sharp finishing and ability to control key moments of the match.

Despite the scoreline, the Bulls showed resilience, particularly in defence. Goalkeeper Filip Kurto produced several important saves under pressure, including a standout double save that kept the Bulls in the contest early. Kurto reacted bravely to two rapid-fire shots from Pat Wood and Quintal, blocking both efforts in quick succession to prevent Sydney from extending their lead while the score remained 0–1. His strong positioning and quick reflexes were a highlight of the Bulls’ defensive performance.

Macarthur Bulls continued to work hard and finished the match with three shots on target. In the final 20 minutes, the home side lifted their attacking intensity after a tactical decision was made to push into a stronger line of attack. The Bulls looked more threatening going forward and created several promising chances but were unable to convert their opportunities into goals.

Following the match, head coach Mile Sterjovski addressed the media, openly reflecting on the performance. He admitted the Bulls were not playing at their best and suggested the team may have been in a “comfort mode” after a strong five-week run. Sterjovski emphasised that the team must show up at every match, especially when facing a quality opponent like Sydney FC.

He also expressed surprise that the game went ahead despite the predicted heatwave, which had been known around 10 days in advance. Sterjovski revealed the club had requested a postponement due to concerns around player welfare, the quality of the game, and the wellbeing of fans attending the match, but the request was not approved.

Despite the disappointment of the result, the home fans remained vocal and supportive throughout the night, cheering on every run and encouraging the team until the final whistle.

As Junior Reporter, one of the highlights of the night was going behind the scenes on a stadium tour and having the opportunity to meet and interview Bulls players, including Filip Kurto and Damien De Silva. Speaking with the players and hearing directly from the coach made the experience even more special.

For a young reporter like me, it was an unforgettable night, gaining insight into professional football, connecting with fans and players, and feeling the passion of the crowd on a big match night.
